What Happens During Shoulder Arthroscopy?

Before the procedure, the surgeon conducts a detailed evaluation to confirm the need for surgery. This includes a physical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans.

On the day of surgery, additional tests like blood work, chest X-ray, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) may be performed to ensure the patient is fit for anesthesia and surgery. Once cleared, anesthesia is administered, and the patient is taken to the operating room.

During the procedure, the patient is positioned either on their side or in a semi-seated posture. The surgeon makes small, buttonhole-sized incisions around the shoulder to insert an arthroscope (a thin camera) and specialized instruments. The joint is then examined and treated as needed. After completing the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures and covered with bandages.

What to Expect After Shoulder Arthroscopy?
After surgery, the patient is monitored in a recovery room. Some patients can go home the same day, while others may stay overnight for observation. The procedure typically takes less than an hour.

Mild pain and swelling are common in the first few days and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medications. After discharge, patients are advised to take medications such as pain relievers and antibiotics, and begin physiotherapy to restore shoulder movement and strength.

Recovery time can vary from 4 weeks to 6 months, depending on the condition treated. Most patients can return to routine work within a few weeks but should avoid strenuous activities until fully healed.

Benefits of Shoulder Arthroscopy

Compared to traditional open surgery, shoulder arthroscopy offers several advantages:

  • Smaller incisions, leading to minimal scarring
  • Lower risk of postoperative complications
  • Reduced pain and stiffness
  • Faster recovery and quicker return to daily activities.
