Minimally Invasive Knee Arthroscopy
Knee arthroscopy is one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures, used to diagnose and treat a wide range of knee problems. Among various knee surgeries, arthroscopic procedures are widely preferred due to their minimally invasive nature and faster recovery.
Surgicarehub offers advanced knee arthroscopy to effectively treat various knee conditions. Book an appointment with an experienced orthopedic specialist at Surgicarehub for expert care and treatment.

What is Knee Arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat injuries and other conditions affecting the knee joint. During the procedure, the surgeon makes 2–3 small incisions around the knee to insert an arthroscope (a thin tube with a camera and light) along with specialized surgical instruments.
The arthroscope allows the surgeon to clearly view the inside of the knee joint and perform precise treatment while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. Because the procedure involves very small incisions, it typically results in less pain and a faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
When is Knee Arthroscopy Required?
Knee arthroscopy is usually recommended for patients with significant knee joint problems who do not respond to non-surgical treatments such as medications, rest, physiotherapy, or injections.
Common conditions where knee arthroscopy may be advised include:
- Meniscus tears
- ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) injuries
- Inflammation of the synovial tissue
- Damage to the articular cartilage
- Synovial chondromatosis
- Patellar fractures
- Patellar malalignment
- Knee joint infections (sepsis)

Types of Knee Arthroscopy
- Meniscus Surgery: Performed to treat a torn meniscus using techniques such as meniscus repair, meniscectomy, or meniscus reconstruction.
- ACL Reconstruction: Done to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which is crucial for knee stability.
- Lateral Release / Patella Realignment: A procedure used to correct kneecap (patella) dislocation or misalignment.
- Microfracture: Helps stimulate new cartilage growth to replace damaged cartilage.
- Cartilage Transfer (OATS): Involves transferring healthy cartilage from one part of the joint to a damaged area to improve joint function.
What Happens During Knee Arthroscopy?
Before the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon performs a detailed evaluation, including a physical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans.
On the day of surgery, additional tests like a blood panel, chest X-ray, and electrocardiogram (ECG) may be conducted to ensure you are fit for surgery. The procedure is typically performed under general, regional, or local anesthesia.
During surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions (called portals) around the knee and fills the joint with a sterile fluid to improve visibility. An arthroscope is inserted to view the internal structures, and specialized instruments are used to perform the required treatment. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed and bandaged.
The surgery usually takes less than an hour, after which the patient is moved to a recovery room for monitoring.
Benefits of Knee Arthroscopy
Knee arthroscopy is a safe and effective procedure that offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including:
- Smaller incisions and minimal scarring
- More accurate diagnosis and treatment
- Shorter surgical duration
- Reduced postoperative pain and inflammation
- Minimal damage to surrounding tissues
- Faster recovery and return to daily activities
- Lower risk of complications
