What is Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive orthopedic procedure used to diagnose and treat joint-related problems. It allows surgeons to examine the inside of a joint without causing significant damage to the surrounding tissues.
The procedure is performed by making small incisions through which a specialized instrument called an arthroscope is inserted. This is a thin tube equipped with a fiber-optic camera that transmits high-definition images to a monitor, helping the surgeon accurately diagnose and treat the condition.
Arthroscopy is commonly performed on weight-bearing and frequently used joints such as the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist. It is often used as a diagnostic option when imaging tests do not provide clear results. Additionally, it is widely preferred as a treatment method due to its benefits, including faster recovery, minimal pain, and a lower risk of complications.

What Happens During Arthroscopy?
Before the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon conducts a detailed evaluation to identify the exact cause of the problem and determine the most suitable treatment. This typically includes imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or ultrasound.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the surgeon discusses the treatment plan with the patient. Arthroscopy is usually performed under general or regional anesthesia, depending on the joint involved and the complexity of the procedure.
During the surgery, small incisions (about 3–4 mm) are made to insert the arthroscope and specialized instruments. The surgeon then examines and treats the joint with precision, minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. After the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures and covered with bandages to aid healing.
What Are the Risks Associated with Arthroscopy?
Although arthroscopy is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries some potential risks, including:
- Injury to tissues or nerves during the procedure
- Allergic reactions or complications related to anesthesia
- Infection at the surgical site
- Bleeding or swelling
- Rare chances of instrument malfunction during surgery
- Formation of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)

Having a homecare attendant can make the recovery process more comfortable and manageable. However, it is not always necessary, especially after minor arthroscopic procedures such as shoulder arthroscopy or carpal tunnel release.
In most cases, pain significantly reduces within a few days after arthroscopy, especially if you follow your prescribed medications and physiotherapy routine. Complete relief may take some time, depending on the condition treated and your recovery progress.
An arthroscope is a thin, narrow tube equipped with a fiber-optic camera and a light source at one end. This allows the surgeon to clearly view the inside of a joint on a monitor during the procedure.
Arthroscopic surgery has a high success rate of over 90%. It is considered a safe and effective procedure, with most patients experiencing significant pain relief and improved joint function, allowing them to return to their normal activities with minimal lifestyle changes.
Types of Arthroscopic Surgery
