What is Spine Surgery?
Spine surgery is a medical procedure aimed at relieving pain and restoring function caused by spinal problems. It helps stabilize the vertebrae and spinal joints affected by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal deformities, bone spurs, injuries, or spinal tumors.
Modern spine surgeries, including Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS), Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS), and Arthroscopic Spine Surgery, are designed to minimize damage to surrounding muscles and tissues. These advanced techniques typically result in less pain and a shorter recovery period compared to traditional open spine surgery.

Types of Spine Surgery
Spine surgery encompasses a variety of procedures designed to relieve pain, restore function, and stabilize the spine. Common types include:
- Cervical Disc Replacement: The damaged disc or portions of it are removed and replaced with a bone graft or artificial disc. Benefits include improved mobility, faster recovery, better function, and reduced risk of future pain.
- Discectomy: Removal of a herniated or bulging disc pressing on spinal nerves to relieve pain and other symptoms.
- Foraminotomy: Enlarges the openings where spinal nerves exit the spinal canal, reducing nerve compression caused by spinal stenosis or foraminal stenosis.
- Spinal Laminectomy: Involves removing all or part of the lamina (the back portion of a vertebra) to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, commonly used to treat spinal stenosis.
- Microdiscectomy: A minimally invasive procedure that removes fragments of a herniated or ruptured disc to alleviate back pain.
- Lumbar Discectomy: Surgery targeting herniated discs in the lower back. It can be performed minimally invasively (arthroscopic) or through open spine surgery.
- Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty: Stabilizes compression fractures by injecting special cement into the vertebrae. Kyphoplasty also uses a balloon to restore some vertebral height.
- Artificial Disc Replacement: Replaces a damaged or degenerated spinal disc with an artificial one, allowing continued motion at the affected level.
- Spinal Fusion: Permanently joins two or more vertebrae to treat spinal instability, scoliosis, or herniated discs. Small screws and rods hold the vertebrae together, sometimes supplemented with a bone graft to promote natural fusion.
When is Spine Surgery Required?
Spine surgery may be recommended for patients experiencing severe pain, loss of function, or spinal instability. Common indications include:
- Degenerative disc diseases, such as spinal arthritis or spinal stenosis
- Herniated discs causing nerve compression or sciatica
- Spinal instability
- Bone spurs or spinal tumors
- Scoliosis or other spinal deformities
- Traumatic injuries or fractures affecting spinal function
An orthopedic surgeon evaluates each case individually to determine the most appropriate surgical approach based on the patient’s condition and symptoms.

After minimally invasive spine surgery, most patients can resume normal daily activities, including bending, lifting, and twisting, within 6–8 weeks. However, more complex procedures, such as spinal fusion, may require a longer recovery period depending on the severity and location of the condition.
The duration of spine surgery varies based on the complexity of the procedure. For most minimally invasive spine surgeries, the surgery typically takes around 1–2 hours.
Most patients stay in the hospital for 1–2 days following spine surgery. However, the exact duration may vary depending on the type and complexity of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and how well they respond to the surgery.
As with any surgical procedure, spine surgery—including endoscopic or minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS)—carries certain risks. These may include:
- Infection at the surgical site
- Allergic reactions to anesthesia
- Blood clots
- Pain and discomfort
- Nerve injury or paralysis (rare)
- Stroke (very rare)
Your surgeon will discuss these risks in detail and take precautions to minimize complications.
Rehabilitation and physiotherapy usually start soon after hospital discharge. The duration of physiotherapy can range from 4–6 weeks or longer, depending on the severity of your condition and the type of spine surgery performed.
The most common spine surgery is spinal decompression with fusion. In this procedure, pressure is relieved from pinched nerves to reduce pain and restore function. The surgeon then stabilizes the spine using hardware such as screws and rods to anchor the vertebrae securely.
Spinal surgery may be required in cases of traumatic injury, such as fractures or spinal cord damage, and in situations where a patient is losing the ability to use an arm or a leg. In such cases, surgery is often urgent or even emergent to prevent further complications.
