What is knee replacement surgery?
Knee replacement surgery, also called arthroplasty or total knee replacement, involves replacing a damaged, worn, or diseased knee joint with an artificial one. During the procedure, metal and plastic components are used to cap the ends of the bones forming the knee joint, including the kneecap.
This surgery is typically recommended for patients with severe arthritis or major knee injuries. A successful knee replacement can significantly improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life, with noticeable benefits in physical function, stiffness, vitality, and overall daily activities.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery
There are two main types of knee replacement surgery: total knee replacement and partial knee replacement.
Total Knee Replacement Surgery
This procedure replaces both sides of the knee joint. The orthopedic surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone, then positions a new metal and plastic implant to restore proper alignment and function. The surgery usually takes 1–3 hours to complete.
Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
In partial knee replacement, only one compartment of the knee—either the outer (lateral) or inner (medial) side—is replaced with an artificial joint. The surgeon makes a small incision to access the affected area, carefully moves supporting structures aside, and removes damaged cartilage and bone from the tibia and femur. This procedure is less invasive than total knee replacement, involves less disruption of bone and soft tissue, and is generally easier on the body.

You should consult an orthopedist if you have a serious knee injury or chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis that cause significant pain and limit your ability to perform daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or other routine tasks.
After a successful knee replacement surgery, most patients remain free of knee-related problems for 10–15 years or more.
The choice of a knee implant depends on several factors, including age, type of knee replacement surgery, overall health, severity of knee damage, and budget. Typically, the doctor and patient make the decision together after careful evaluation to select the most suitable implant.
Most patients are able to get out of bed and start walking on the same day as their knee replacement surgery. Hospital discharge usually occurs within 2–3 days. Rehabilitation begins immediately with a personalized exercise program supervised by your orthopedic surgeon. Pain is managed with medications, which also help prevent complications and support a faster recovery.
Most patients are discharged 3–5 days after a minimally invasive knee replacement surgery.
After knee replacement surgery, initial pain, swelling, and inflammation usually improve within 2–4 weeks. The discomfort is generally mild and can be effectively managed with prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications.
Spinal or general anesthesia is typically used to numb the area and ensure you remain comfortable throughout the knee replacement surgery.
Minimally invasive knee replacement surgery can be performed in adult patients of any age. Even patients over 50 years old who are medically fit and in good health may undergo the procedure if painful conditions, such as arthritis, limit their daily activities and lifestyle.
