What Are Gallbladder Stones?

Gallbladder stones, commonly known as gallstones, are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder—a small organ located beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats.

These stones can range in size from tiny, grain-like particles to larger, pebble-shaped formations. They are usually made of cholesterol, bilirubin (a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown), or a mix of both.

In many cases, gallstones don’t cause any noticeable symptoms and may go undetected for years. However, problems arise when a stone blocks the bile ducts—the pathways that carry bile to the small intestine. This blockage can lead to sudden, intense abdominal pain, often referred to as a gallbladder attack.

What Are The Types Of Gallbladder Stones?

Gallstones are mainly classified into two types based on what they are made of:

1. Cholesterol Stones
These are the most common type, making up about 80–85% of all gallstone cases. They are primarily formed from excess cholesterol in the bile. Cholesterol stones can vary in size and usually appear yellow or greenish in color. They develop when there is an imbalance in bile composition—specifically when there is too much cholesterol and not enough bile salts and lecithin to keep it dissolved.

2. Pigment Stones
Pigment stones are mainly made of bilirubin, a substance produced when red blood cells break down. They also contain calcium salts found in bile. These stones are typically smaller, darker, and more rigid compared to cholesterol stones. They tend to form when there is an increased level of bilirubin in the bile or when bile lacks enough salts to keep bilirubin in a dissolved state.

Why Is the Entire Gallbladder Removed Instead of Just the Stones?

Removing the whole gallbladder provides a permanent solution. If only the stones are removed, new ones can form again over time. Also, small stones may be missed during removal. Taking out the gallbladder prevents recurrence and reduces future complications.

What Is a Gallbladder Lumen Stone?

A gallbladder lumen stone, also called an intraluminal gallstone, is a stone located inside the hollow cavity (lumen) of the gallbladder. The lumen is the inner space of an organ where fluids, like bile, are stored or flow through.

Can large gallstones be treated with medication?

Medications are usually not effective for large gallstones (14–17 mm). Surgery is typically the best and most reliable treatment, especially if symptoms occur.

Can a 1 cm gallstone be passed naturally without surgery? Passing a 1 cm gallstone naturally is unlikely due to its larger size.
